Note 46
Until fairly recently, the first instance of a four-story arrangement was believed to occur in Tournai (ca. 1100). Two very slightly earlier though much more primitive instances—again demonstrating the close interrelation between Flanders and England—have, however, been discovered in Tewkesbury (founded in 1087) and Pershore (founded between 1090 and 1100); cf. J. Bony, “Tewkesbury et Pershore, deux élévations à quatre étages de la fin du XIe siècle,” Bulletin Monumental, 1937, pp. 281 ff., 503 ff.
